Adobe have just released an updated version of the Adobe Lens Profile Creation tool (discussed elsewhere on this website) and a new Lens Profile Downloader application.
- Adobe has a utility for creating own custom Lightroom lens correction profiles called Adobe Lens Profile Creator. They also used to have Adobe Lens Profile Downloader that allowed to share and download custom profiles uploaded by other people.
- A large collection of LCP (Adobe Lens Correction Profiles - for correcting lens distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration) and DCP (DNG Color Profiles - camera input color profiles) come bundled with Adobe DNG Converter. This section explains how to install Adobe DNG Converter and where to find the DCP and LCP profiles.
- The lens profile downloader is a standalone Adobe AIR application. It’s a free companion application to Photoshop CS5, Photoshop Lightroom 3, and the Camera Raw 6 plug-in, and is intended to allow customers to search, download, rate and comment on the online lens correction profiles that are created and shared by the user community.

Lightroom 3 users in particular will find this application very useful, especially if they don’t have a copy Photoshop CS5.
Custom lens profiles created via Adobe Lens Profile Creator 1.0 should be saved to the following locations: Library Application Support Adobe Camera Profiles Lens Correction 1.0 (Mac), C: Program Files Common files Adobe Camera Profiles Lens Correction 1.0 (Windows 32-bit), C: Program Files (x86) Common Files Adobe Camera Profiles Lens Correction 1.0 (Windows 64-bit), C: Documents. The Lens Profile Creator is compatible with both Windows and Mac OSX systems and suitable for use in the Photoshop family of Adobe products. Once the utility is downloaded it will work alongside.
As can be seen from the screen shot shown below the UI is relatively straightforward. To find a lens profile it’s a simple matter of first selecting the camera vendor name (e.g. Canon). A list of all available* lens profiles will appear. This list of available lens profiles can be further refined by choosing the lens model from the relevant drop-down menu. Further refinement can be achieved from within the Camera Model and Crop Factor drop-down menus.

The downloader application also provides users with the facility to rate and comment on any lens profiles that they have downloaded. However, to comment or rate a lens profile you must be logged on to Photoshop.com. Typically, this will be by inserting your Adobe Account user name and password into the Sign In dialog.
How To Use Adobe Lens Profile Creator
* Only community created lens profiles are available via the downloader application. Profiles created by Adobe or their partners (e.g. Sigma, Tamron, etc) are incorporated into the download package for Lightroom and Camera Raw.

If you don’t see any lens profiles listed for a particular lens, you will have two choices. You can either make one yourself using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator program, or locate a custom profile that someone else has made. The Adobe Lens Profile Creator program is available free from http://labs.adobe.com, along with full documentation that explains how you should go about photographing one of the supplied Adobe Lens Calibration charts and generate custom lens profiles for your own lenses. It really isn’t too difficult to do yourself once you have mastered the basic principles. If you are familiar with what’s new in Photoshop CS5, you will be aware that Photoshop also has the auto lens correction feature included within the updated Lens Corrections filter and that it is very easy to access shared custom lens profiles that have been created by other Photoshop customers (using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator program). Unfortunately, the Lens Corrections panel in Lightroom doesn’t provide a shared user lens profile option, so whether you are creating lens profiles for yourself or wishing to install supplied lens profiles, you will need to reference the directory path lists shown in the sidebar opposite. Once you have added a new lens profile to the Lens Correction or LensProfiles folder, you will need to quit Lightroom and restart before any newly added lens profiles appear listed in the Automatic Lens Corrections panel profile list.
